Everyone loves a beautiful hardwood floor, but as anyone with kids, animals, or house guests knows- those gorgeous floors can suffer over time.
Luckily, there are several ways to get your hardwood floor looking like new, some of which are quick, cheap, and easy! Here are a few of our favorite:
1). Make a Homemade Polish
Hide scratches with a homemade concoction: equal parts olive oil and vinegar. These will help get rid of dirt AND shine wood by adding moisture. Wipe a little over the scratch with a clean paper towel or rag. Let it soak for a day, then wipe off and repeat a few times as necessary.
2). Fill Gaps with Wood Putty
After a few years of wear and tear, old floorboards can separate, resulting in gaps. You can fill these gaps with colored wood putty, getting those planks back in line and tightened up!
3). Sharpies and Crayons for Scuffs
Yes, really. Depending on the type of wood (and color), you can mix a few shades and get white scuffs closer to their original color. Real hardwood is a mix of shades and tones, so if it doesn’t match exactly, no harm done. You can also grab Minwax Stain Markers, which include stain and urethane, and do a great job of protecting the floor’s finish.
PRO TIP: Take it slow- it’s always easier to add a little more, than to erase the work of a heavy hand.
4). Martha’s Recipe: Wood Floor Cleaner
The queen of crafts and home recommends the following for a hardwood floor cleaner:
- Use a damp — not saturated — sponge mop to wash with warm water.
- If your wood floor is really dirty, try a solution of 1/8 cup plant-based liquid soap and 1/8 cup distilled white vinegar to 1 gallon water
(some people like to add 10 drops essential oil for fragrance). See more HERE
